Allthink is where free thinkers connect.

Allthink is a community of writers, journalists, and videomakers posting interesting ideas that are actually worth reading. Our tools make it easy to post your thoughts, our minimalist design makes them look good, and our community makes them easy to spread.

Anyone can join. We want diverse opinions. This site is built from the ground up to allow multiple opposing points of view intelligently interact. Each user has the tools to choose the conversations in which they participate. We don't ban or punish users for their viewpoints.

To share your thoughts, first signup for a profile. Then you can post a short thought directly in the box on your profile, or you write a long article thought with formatting by clicking the Write link in the nav.

You may edit thoughts. You may also hide thoughts. Hiding a thought will remove it from your profile and your followers' feeds, but the thought will still be viewable at it's given URL.

You may mute users you do not wish to interact with. Muting a person will stop all notifications from them and prevent their replies from being listed under your thoughts. Muting prevents you from being annoyed while still allowing others to speak freely.

You may remove individual replies from your thoughts. This will unlist them from the page, but the reply will still be visible elsewhere on the site. Our goal here is to prevent SPAM replies.

Once your profile has reached certain quality criteria, it can be listed in the Directory. It will be listed under only one hashtag, which you must set by clicking Account > Account Settings.

We hope this little introduction can help get you started. Please join us. Our community is waiting to hear your thoughts.

@1117474 Interesting site and I hope you succeed at it.

However, I think the site could use a detailed Help file showing which HTML formatting tags are accepted, along with a preview function to see the effects. A process which seems rather cumbersome at the moment. Also, once I've posted a reply to someone's post, I don't see any indication who I've responded to or whether it's been received or not. In addition, in my own Home page, I don't see any way to get to this one which is presumably the only way of contacting site admins etc.

Thanks.

@1146589 Hi Steersman, thanks for your feedback and welcome to Allthink! I took at look at your previous reply to Cathy Young and it's superb.

On the HTML, let me try to understand what's going on. You got in some great HTML formatting so you must've been able to use our WYSIWYG editor somehow - that should be showing a preview and show a list of HTML tag options when you highlight text. Was that not the case? If so, could you tell me a little more about how you posted that formatting and what went wrong.

As for the reply, I think you saw on this reply that you were redirected back to the original post where your reply was listed below. That's because this reply contained the at-reply to the postid rather than your previous most which contained an at-mention of Cathy. That's our fault for not auto-filling-in the at-reply when you clicked "Long" for the WYSIWYG editor. We just fixed that so long replies are prefilled with the at-reply id. I went ahead and swapped your at-mention of Cathy to the at-reply of the post so your reply now appear below her article.

If I misunderstood any part of your post, apologies, just clarify for me and I'll be happy to help. Posting to me or @allthink is fine for support or you can email us at info@allthink.com

Cheers!

@1146673 Hello Bri, thanks for the quick response and for fixing that auto-fill thing.

As for the WYSIWYG editor, I created that response to Cathy Young in a Word document, complete with the standard blockquote and link tags, and then copied it all into a Allthink Post window. I didn't see any tag options displayed or anything that suggested a preview. But maybe there's some incompatibility with browser & operating system. I'm still using Windows XP on Chrome who say they won't be providing upgrades b/c XP no longer supported.

But once I hit post, I think it showed up in my Home page (I assume) - showing the "native" form (angle-bracket) of the HTML tags - where I think I saw an Edit button at the bottom. I did that, didn't change anything, and then hit post and then everything showed up in the correct format.

Changing gears, I had been thinking of creating a WordPress blog but maybe Allthink will be a better alternative. But I would like to be able to include a few Wolfram/Mathematica applications in their Computable Document Format if that is supported in Allthink so would appreciate knowing if that's the case.

Thanks,
Jim

@1146734 We'd love to have you blog on Allthink. Your Word pasting solution was very clever. The gray box you see is for short text posts, if you click the "Long" link in the lower right, that'll take you to our WYSIWYG editor, which allows for longer HTML posts (and direct pasting from Word). There, you should be able to highlight text and see formatting options. Hopefully it'll work on your XP system. We don't have support for any Mathamatica now, but I can surely look into it.

@1146796 Ah, I see - thanks. When I go to the long post and highlight text is when the list of formatting options show up - I was expecting a list of sorts at the bottom or top of the dialog box as some sites do. Though I still wonder whether some abbreviated Help file might be a worthwhile addition - if it's not already present somewhere. But do please look into the possibilities of Mathematica when you can, and let me know what you find out. Thanks.
