February HW 1

The following content will be used for items 1 - 5 Here is a passage about a boy in the future. Read the passage. Then answer the questions.
When I woke up this morning, I felt the same as I have for the past 4,035 days…lonely. I never would have guessed that today was going to be any different. I was mistaken; today was absolutely spectacular! My name is Boy 01.01.2599.07.07.11. I was born on January 1, 2599, at 7:07:11 a.m.

At exactly 6:30 a.m. this morning, I woke up. For breakfast, I had one orange pill and one blue pill with a large glass of water. The orange pill contained all my vitamins for the day. The blue pill contained a little bit of protein to start my day. I will have another blue pill and two pink ones for
lunch.

After breakfast I stepped into my protective pod. The heat of the sun and the pollution in the air are so destructive that humans cannot go outside without a pod. They shelter us but they also isolate us. Inside the pod is a small computer screen, a camera, keyboard, speakers, and a comfort control
button to change the inside temperature. When I stepped inside my pod, I was greeted by a message from my mother. Her face appeared on my computer screen wishing me a good day at school. I replied to her message and sent off my own taped greeting to her pod.

As soon as I hit send, the honking school bus beckoned me. I opened the front door and got on the bus. I sent a good morning message to the bus driver's pod. He did not respond. I suppose it's a good thing; he should probably keep his eyes on the road. I'm glad I'm too young to drive. I think I would get dizzy. Everything is gray! The skyscrapers are gray; the houses are gray; the cars are
gray; the roads are gray; the pods are gray.

Instead of getting dizzy and carsick watching the gray world through the bus window, I spent the one-hour drive to school playing a computer game inside my pod. I think all the other students must have been playing games inside their pods too. Nobody sent me a message.

I stayed in my pod and walked to class. I plugged my pod into the floor port and was connected. We stay in our pods at school and learn from our computer screens. Today we were going to watch a history presentation by Girl 11.22.2599.05.09.37. Her assigned topic was life in the new
millennium: years 2000-2025.

She appeared on my computer screen and smiled.

"Good morning class. In the year 2000, humans did not need pods. Please step out of your pod. I will be giving my presentation in person, without a computer."

I jumped out of my pod with excitement. To my surprise, no other students stepped out of their pods. They were too scared. Girl 11.22.2599.05.09.37 decided to give her presentation to the teacher and me. She showed us a real book with paper pages. She taught us how to play a card
game. For her conclusion, she gave us chocolate chip cookies that she had made. They were delicious!

Our teacher realized how much fun we had learning about life in the new millennium and asked if we wanted to start a new club. I got super excited!
"Yes!" we yelled.

We decided that the club would meet every day after school. Pods were not allowed. Instead, wewould meet in person and play games together. For the first time in my life, I did not feel lonely.

Now I had a real friend!
